Throughout the program, students will complete a breadth requirement to obtain an in-depth knowledge of computer science, fulfill a depth requirement with an oral qualifying exam to guarantee the ability to do research, formulate an individual study plan, write and present a thesis proposal, and write and defend a Ph.D. thesis approved by a dissertation guidance committee. In the same way, students will have a strong understanding of the design and analysis of algorithms, machine learning and data science, computation, distributed operating systems, computer architecture, big data, computer networking, database systems, compiler design, network security, and computer graphics. Similarly, they will acquire advanced knowledge in applied cryptography, application security, human-computer interaction, web search engines, AI for games, natural language processing, and computer vision. Graduates from the program will have a solid foundation and experience to work in various fields and industries, from large tech companies, data analytics, engineering, research, renewable energy, gaming, and robotics, to educational firms.

The admission requirements for the Computer Science, Ph.D. at New York University (NYU) Tandon School of Engineering are an online application and a non-refundable application fee of $90, a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of four years of full-time study from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, a GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 scale, official transcripts and degree conferral, academic record and proof of degree, a statement of purpose, resume, English language proficiency TOEFL minimum score of 90 or IELTS minimum score of 7.0, note on credential evaluation services, and recommendation letters.

The program has a full-time duration of 5 years. Doctoral students are required to pay a tuition fee of $38,160 excluding other fees such as room and board, travel and personal expenses, and health insurance. NYU is committed to awarding scholarships, grants, and financial aid packages to qualified full-time students taking at least 12 credits.
