James Cook University (JCU) is a public teaching and research university in Queensland and is the only university in Australia founded to focus on the issues of Northern Australia and the Tropics. It administers nationally significant and internationally recognized research in various areas and is acknowledged as one of the leaders in research dealing with the critical challenges facing the Tropics, worldwide. JCU aims to support societies, health systems, built environment, natural world, and the people. It offers Bachelor in Engineering (BEng) (Hons) – Electronic Systems and Internet of Things Engineering Major that associates information technology, data analytics, and electronic engineering in a degree that will provide software skills taught in the traditional IT course and hard skills in the traditional electronic engineering course, in addition to problem-solving and critical thinking skills and innovation. Learners will acquire a detailed understanding of the fundamentals of engineering in their first year and widen their theoretical and practical knowledge and skills as they take the specialized engineering major plus four elective subjects. Similarly, learners will design smart technologies, be familiarized with the physical-layer and application-layer IoT techniques that include data analytics, smart devices networks and protocols, privacy, and security, as well as analyze big data, and develop sensor technologies.
Throughout the program duration, students will develop innovative solutions to real-world problems using the outstanding NB-IoT standards, and gain hands-on skills through laboratory activities and field trips since they have access to the first Narrowband IoT research facility in Australia. In the same way, students will work with wireless communication and cloud computing operating an advanced Internet of Things research laboratory. Graduates from this program will showcase practical knowledge in digital logic and computing method, mobile computing, information security, embedded systems design, statistical data mining, programming, digital signal processing, and computer interfacing, as well as provide solutions using actual computer interfacing and operating systems and find inventive ways to strengthen businesses. Likewise, they will design electronic, software, and data analytics for various industries including smart healthcare, communications, smart cities, precision agriculture, manufacturing, energy, mining, environmental monitoring, and automation.
